Medical Supplies for a Hiking Trip

One of the joys of life is being out in nature just enjoying the trees and the breeze; it’s a joy, that is, until you sprain an ankle or get stung by a bee. This is why it’s vital that you pack some medical supplies whenever you’re going on a hiking trip. Even though they mean you have to carry a bit more, they’ll allow you to be prepared for unexpected situations like these. You don’t need to take everything but the kitchen sink, but you should think about taking some of the following basic medical supplies.

For one thing, you should always carry bandages with you. You don’t necessarily need to slap a bandage onto every single inevitable cut or scrape you get while hiking, but if you’re actually bleeding, bandages can help prevent infection by keeping the wound clean. Speaking of which, it’s not a bad idea to have some antibiotic ointment along either. Even though you’ll want to clean out your wound more thoroughly when you’re done hiking, just a dab of this cream can help prevent infection, too.

Also, you’ll want to think about things like wraps for sprained ankles and such. If someone on your hiking trip sprains and ankle, it will be painful to walk back to your car or campsite, but it will be even more painful if that person has to walk with one shoe off because his ankle swelled up too much or has to walk without the support that a good bandage can lend.

Besides this, you may want to include basic antihistamine ointment and pills in your medical supplies. Even though no one on your trip may be severely allergic to bees and other biting or stinging plants or animals, people sometimes have unexpected reactions, so it’s always best to be prepared.
